Should Teachers Assign Homework?
85As a teacher, one of my constant frustrations has been with homework. How much homework should be given and how often? How much should homework impact a student's grade? Is it meaningful? Are the students doing the homework? These are questions that have existed in education for years. Recently there have been a number of books, such as Alfie Kohn's The Homework Myth: Why Our Children Get Too Much Of A Bad Thing Sara Bennett's The Case Against Homework: How Homework Is Hurting Our Children and What We Can Do About It argue that homework is bad for students. Others argue it is essential to keep up high standards and cover all that needs to covered in a school year. To be effective homework needs to be seen as a tool and used properly.
One of the biggest issues with homework is how much students are getting and at what age. In my educational career homework was assigned at an early age, but not in large amounts. In the early elementary grades most of my homework consisted of some math problems and spelling words. As grade levels increased, so did homework. My private Catholic high school had a goal of thirty minutes of homework for each class, or three hours. This was rarely the case. What may take one person thirty minutes can take three hours for some one else.
The biggest problem with homework is its usefulness. Many assignments are little more than filler material, "busy work" as the students like to call it, given just to give homework. Often there is pressure from both parents and administration to give homework so your class looks legitimate. The classic worksheet assignment I grew up doing is virtually useless from my professional experience. In most cases they are done with little effort or thinking about what is being written. Often they are done at the last second just to turn in for some points. One of my biggest pet peeves is watching a student doing homework right in front of me seconds before the bell rings. Often the worksheets are just copied with no thought at all to the information, or just not done at all.
The other major problem with homework is simply time. Most students are active outside of class in either extra curricular activities such as sports or clubs, or they work after school. Three hours of homework for some one who can not even begin thinking about homework until 8pm or later is not realistic. Students are forced to cut short much needed sleep, making them almost useless in class, or are forced to cheat to get things done.
Homework can be useful if done properly and not at overburdonesome amounts. In his excellent article 17 Reasons Why Football Is Better Than High School Herb Childress explains homework should be an extension of what is being done in the class. In football, homework is lifting weights or studying plays, things that make performance on the field better. Homework should be something other than what is done in class. How many math problems need to be done to understand the idea?
My subject area, social studies, is notorious for the worksheet homework assignment. I believe homework in this subject area needs to consist mostly of reading something other than the text book. Reading interesting personal narratives or even fiction can help students develop a context to the time period being studied. While reading, students have a chance to develop skills that have been used in the classroom as well as develop questions and opinions that can be shared in class.
Homework is not by definition a bad thing. Too much homework that is not valuable to student learning and is given at too early an age is a bad thing. Whether the homework dilemma is ever resolved, only time will tell.

Nice article. I believe, home work is a really important aspect of schooling. It complements whats taught at school and should be given as a revision of what was taught in the day.
You make some great points! I think reading should be done at home, but, unfortunately, in many cities kids can be attacked by bullies and gang members because they are carrying books.

Back in High School, I got 200% on homework because the denominator is curve to be the second highest score. Also, I completed all my homework in class, and still have half of the class time remaining open to do nothing. I only need 1 year to complete high school if the school system teach properly.

Homework can hurt the child's back. When kids do homework they do not move around a lot, so they get very less of the exercise they need to stay healthy. While doing homework you may ask your parents for help, but they do not know what you are talking about. The next day if that problem you will get an incomplete homework which lowers your grades.

We all remember the teachers who just couldn't let you go home for the weekend without homework in their subject--a high school Latin teacher comes to mind.
But as you've stated, when homework isn't busy work, but an extension of classroom learning, then it is a valuable tool. Things as simple as bringing in something about current events that relates to what is being studied serves more than one purpose, and doesn't require a large investment of time.

I am in grade 12 right now and I have two totally different teachers. One, who is my Calculus 12 teacher, tells us what questions we should do, but never checks the homework. He can tell who's actually doing it by test marks.
The other teacher is my Physics 12 teacher who assigns a lot of homework and marks it THOROUGHLY, as if it was a test, so there is no fast way of doing the homework from him.
I personally believe that by grade 12 it should be up to the student to determine how much homework he/she needs to do. The teacher should be there to teach the curriculum, tell the students which questions relate to the topic, but it should be up to the student to do however much he/she needs to understand the work.
I perform well in school (all marks above 90% with 97% final mark in physics 11 and 96% final mark in math 12). My physics teacher is killing me with a (get this) BINDER CHECK, as well as all the homework so meanwhile my other courses that I need to spend more time on don't get the proper attention. This hurts my grade in all my classes as my time isn't divided as its should be for ME.
Getting back to original question, I believe that the teacher should simply tell the students which questions relate and let them decide how to manage their time (at least for grade 12 anyways). This prepares them more than anything for the "next step" as it truly teaches a little thing called "self-management".

My math teacher sucks. Here is my story:
Every friday she assigns us effin "friday problems" to do.
This past wednesday we had a snow day, so she assigned us 32 problems and said to "teach ourselves" 2 chapters in the textbook. I did the homework, as well as completed the friday problems. On thursday, we had a 2 hour snow delay to school, and missed math again. What do you know, she assigns us to "teach ourselves" another lesson, and more math problems due friday. I, having completed the h.w. due for thursday and the weekly friday problems presumed that she could not possibly assign us any more work, since we didn't even have class, didn't bring my math textbook home. I went to class friday without completing my homework and she gave me an hour of detention after school which was spent cleaning chalk board erasers, even when i had a major history project due the next day that i hadn't even started yet.
Teachers don't understand. I go to school from 8 to 3, and then have sports and I don't get home until 4:30 on usual practice days, even later if we have a game. I shower, and eat dinner, and don't start homework until 5:30 or 6:00. i'm so stressed from school and so tired that it is hard for me to stay focused through piles of homework and studying and tests and papers and projects. I usually finally finish around midnight, and go into an overtired sleep only to be waken up 6 hours later,. I am beginning to hate school because of all the stress. I hate work. I need more sleep. Then my parents complain I'm not grateful and there are starving people and that I should be thankful for my good education. But school only gives me stress, bags under my eyes, acne, and migraines.

The overuse of homework is not helpful. I have lots of homework for my history class, which is mainly revision on what we've already learnt at school. The amount of work assinged for homework is much more then we are given at school. Under the education system I'm in, the teacher only ticks to see if it's finished and does not even look at it to see if i understand what I'm writing about.
To much homework makes it hard to catch up with subjects I've been having difficulty with and trying to catch up with everything is nearly impossible. Because the system isn't allowed to be changed the teachers will not relieve some of the work so I may catch up.
In this way I feel the education system is less about educating, as I find it hard to learn things with constant assignments and due dates to worry about.

One of the best teachers I ever had gave us the smallest amount of homework, and I learned the most from him than any other teacher. And he was my climatology/earth sciences teacher. He was engaging, and happy to be there and teach us. He made sure that we all understood the material before we moved on to something else. He was very considerate, and was a strong believer in that too much homework made for bad and tired students; he always asked if there was some large projects coming up in any other classes before he assigned one himself. (As in, he would make sure his projects weren't due on the same day as about four others were.)
That was one of the things that irked me to most about school. Those days where it seemed like ALL the teachers got together and planned to have projects worth half your final grade ALL due on the same day. That, and nonsense home work they seemed to hand out as if you needed it to live. Teachers who give too much homework think you only have time for their class alone.

As a high-school student, I simply do not see any benefit from loads of homework. We go to school and work for eight hours a day and then (if you have as much as me) are usually up until 11:00 to 12:00 every night doing homework, and usually not completing it. This forces students to wake up early every morning to complete it. I get so much homework over the weekends that I hardly ever have any time to be with my friends. Saturday is almost always taken up and a lot of times Sunday is as well. Do you want to know why we get so much? Simple answer: TODAY'S TEACHERS ARE LAZY! We do nothing in class (the teacher doesn't put homework on the board until, literally, the last 5 minutes of class) and then are expected to go home and learn what should have been taught in class by ourselves and then do the ridiculous amount of work assigned that follows. In short, I used to have something called a social life, but then I went to high school.
Homework literally risked my life. In the impossible fear trap involved in facing discipline and potential labelling as in defiance of authority and to be stuck in a room with the headmaster screaming over me, when I could not do the work he believed I could do, there was no adult to turn to, they had all been brainwashed to believe I was as clever as this nutter fantasised of, and any confided fears risked getting confided straight on to the school. The only way I found to get out of this without suicide or running away, was to go into states of catatonic total unresponsiveness. Which eventually, only after the test of sustaining such a state in front of the headmaster's bellow, they were forced to class as a mental health issue. Resulting in removal from school into another authoritarian abusive setting, escape from which in turn was only possible by returning to the school, which meant continuing not to renounce the school's ideas of reveal what I really thought of them -this after for years they had planned I would serve as propaganda in their favour.
This Orwellian horror was my life as a citizen of a Western democracy, in the 80s in Wales. While we are at it, these atrocities also had the effect of destroying my chance to be a child author. My whole life was devastated and prevented from having any chance to progress with normal prospects. It is an experience whose public exposure conclusively proves homework a life-threatening child abuse and crime against humanity, it proves every child subject to homework is in criminal danger - and this has been hidden from you for all the present school population's lifetimes and for nearly 30 years.
First I had to climb out of the hole of having my testimony just seen as mental - the horrible school's discredited decline and closure saw to that. Then, nobody will publish it or has any rear of legal consequences for mass endangerment of children from claiming to have even in theory a shred of choice about it. Meanwhile, deliberately, these issues feature nowhere in politics or news coverage about education policy. When the whole political scene agrees so, an issue can be airbrushed out of public awareness, made a non-issue, we have no safeguards of participative democracy against that happening. This is how criminal are the means whereby the bloodsoaked crime called homework is being perpetuated.
The Scottish Autism Services Network has an item about it on its website: called Faculties Not Gifts. You have to know it exists, same as this site here, to find it and read it, and you will only do that if you are a thinking person who already knows of the issue. It won't happen if you are a Sun reader or a parent stuffed with fantasy promises by the gifted movement.

Most teachers don't consider that students have 6-7 classes that they are taking in high school. They will all assign major projects that are due on the same day or have a massive test on the same day. Teachers give too much homework these days and don't see that students have a life outside of school. Students sit in school for about 7.5 hours per day and to come home and do 8 hours of homework is too much. This is why kids are asleep in school and don't preform at their best in their classes; because they have to stay up very late doing homework.
I come from Northern Ontario, in grade 11- trying to withold an 81 average. I feel all my time is being consumed by homework, I had part time job and had to quit, in order to keep up with this homework. I no longer have a social life and can no longer take part in extra curricular activites (such as hockey:/). I miss spending time with my family and friends; and feel that teachers do not care how much homework they pile on everynight nor do they take into consideration that the homework assigned in other classes (that evening or that weekend) may be heavy as well. From 4 o'clock pm to a minumium of 10pm, every school night, I am bombarded by homework, and dont even get me started about weekends! You may read this and think I am exaggerating, however I am not- I wish I was. They say homework even gets heavier as we move on to grade twelve and university however, if a person were to actually sit down and do ALL of this homework, and more, everynight, to perfection they may never see the light of day again, nor will they ever get a good night's sleep. And don't even get me started about sleep deprevation as well as the time I have to get up EVERY morning in order to workout, eat breakfast, shower, get ready and walk to school.

The Woodlands College Park High School is the most disorganized, unstructured, and uncaring school in my life.
Heres what I think:
1.Teachers give out tons of hw, because they assume their subject that they teach is the most important.
2.Most teachers don't even want to teach. For example, my teacher for trigonometry said, "You should be grateful that you have me. I don't have to teach you I have my pension."
3.Some teachers expect you to teach yourselves like my trig teacher.

5.Most teachers will give you detention for not doing your homework. One reason is, "The hw I gave you should have taken you 20 mins" my response "It would have taken me 20 mins, but when its 12 and I can't think, I'm tired, and I'm sleepy as hell, homework that would take 20 mins suddenly becomes 1 hour and I don't want to stay up anymore." his response "Well you should've done my homework first I'll see you afterschool."

My science teacher made a really good point as to why she doesn't give homework: she says that she can't expect you to come back to school refreshed and wanting to learn if you had 5 hours of homework last night. I thought this was a really good point, and I was glad I have one reasonable teacher!

Completing homework is a behavior. While students who do their homework will be more successful in school, the grades of students who don't do it will suffer. Why do students not do homework? Sometimes, it is not entirely the student's fault. If everyone had a Leave It to Beaver home life, then maybe homework would be fair, but you cannot assume this.

I am a Sophomore student currently in High School, having every intention of attending college. I also think that homework is indeed important, but only strictly as review and to a mild extent. Having three hours of homework is basically trying to say that we need to learn academics for 10 hours every day, which is to say absurd and unrealistic. The sleep issue is one of my biggest concerns... I've learned the hard way that less sleep than required can easily slow your thinking process and become a detriment in school, especially when waking up at 6 AM or earlier is required to make it there on time for class. Let's face it, teenagers need more sleep than younger kids. So why is it that those kids are being spoiled on excessive amounts of sleep, instead of us teenagers who clearly need it more!? If I remember correctly, lower school students had to attend at 8 or 9 AM. Whereas in high school, 7 AM is the minimum point in time to attend school, much less catch the bus to get there! Homework is not necessarily the culprit, it's the lack of sleep students are getting from being forced to complete it all for the next day, which is utterly ridiculous and stressful, and then having to wake up the next day before the sun does! Rest is what controls our level of thinking, as well as the speed. Students wouldn't be nearly as stressed or incompetent if they just got the sleep they so desperately needed, because then they could be more active in school, and finish the work far quicker and more effectively than it would take them to accomplish with only 6 or less hours of sleep!
My point is that the ultimate problem students are facing today in school is the inability to get a good night's sleep before the next grueling, 6-hour/7-hour session. If that could be achieved, then they would finish the work assigned to them far quicker and more efficiently, then have more time to spend with family and extracurricular activities, not to mention other occupations. But no... Instead, we lose that precious, valued time after school because our bodies and minds have turned against us due to a lack of sleep, which is shamelessly wasted on the lower school students. I understand they're young and need to be treated with more lenience than us High School students... But giving them excess sleep instead of surrendering it to us who need it the most is counter-productive and illogical for the expectations forced upon us teenagers.

I am the mum of an 8 year old and I think homework is ok providing the teachers pitch it at the right person, with the right intent and reinforces what has been learnt in the classroom that day... my 8 year old who has never really conducted research nor knows of religion and spirituallism was asked to research 4 different religions, name them, name their god or gods, what they worship, what holidays they have..... Ok you is this really pitched at?? I think not the 8 year old, but the mum & dad - who to start with had to learn how to explain religion to an 8 year old.
Then explain God and spiritual guidence, be agnostic this was not easy nor was it a very successul task.
The 8 year old did not comprehend nor should he be expected to in such a short time.... I am in my mid 40's and still trying to comprehend this.
Homework, done but not by 8 year old, and a letter sent to the teacher from and very frustrated and annoyed mum.
Homework, yeah give it but make it relevant, and not to involved.... remember it is meant to be of benifit and the student gain something from it.
Homework :/ What the heck is up with THAT nonsense? In my school, there is homework everday. If it isn't Math, it's freaking Spanish, or English, or Social Studies, it's just freaking ridiculous! Homework has never helped. Homework just makes you know that either
1. you're good at a subject

you don't exactly develop skill. You just get stuck on 1 question, and the next, and the next, and the ****ING NEXT! I mean, what's the point of giving homework if you won't learn anything. At all. You already learned this stuff. Maybe to show the teacher that he/she is bad at explaining?
There is right and wrong homework. Example:
Doing pages of additions and substraction is wrong homework.
Asking what one would spend with $5.00 and then discussion the problems with the class in spending only $5.00 and then in a group, propose to spend $20.00 and lastly report on your own spending of $5.00 in a mix discipline assignment involving also science, english and social studies is a great homework assignment.
Im 13, i would much rather pay attention in class then do piles of meaningless busywork 5 hours a night. School would be a nicer, more comfortable, more efficent enviroment if they only gave a few problems to those who did not fully comprehend the lesson presented by the teacher. Schools say homework is for our benifit right?, is loss of sleep, loss of intreist in school, lack of social interaction, and incrediblely high levels of stress a good thing? No, but they continue to give more and more.

Actually, a small amount of homework per day helps students! It assures the teacher that he/she is teaching the material well, and who understand, and vice versa. The problem is, teachers give a lot of homework. According to the Education Department of the US, it is not right to give 10 times the grade level of homework per night. For example:
Grade 1: 10 min
Grade 2: 20 min
Grade 3: 30 min
Grade 4: 40 min
Grade 5: 50 min
Grade 6: 1 hour
Grade 7: 70 min
Grade 8: 80 min
Grade 9-College is as much homework as needed to pass.
Even though this is what they say is "right," it is not yet a law. I hope this helps!
